The Royal Cornwall Museum, a cultural cornerstone of the region, is undergoing a significant transformation. This ambitious project, led by Studio Wignall and Moore, aims to modernise the museum’s spaces, exhibitions, and galleries. Creating a more engaging and interactive experience for visitors. At the heart of this transformation lies the Digital Lab, an innovative space designed to captivate audiences with its immersive audio and video experiences.

A Versatile Space for Multiple Uses
The Digital Lab is a flexible space that can be configured for various purposes, including:
- Immersive Experiences: The L-shaped corner, projection mapped with stunning visuals created by Maximo Recio, transports visitors through the creation of selected minerals.
- Lecture-Style Presentations: The space can be easily transformed into a lecture theatre, with high quality audio and video equipment ensuring clear communication.
- Hybrid Events: The Digital Lab supports video conferencing and live streaming. Therefore enabling remote participation and collaboration.
A Delicate Balance of Innovation and Preservation
The installation of the Digital Lab required careful consideration of the building’s listed status. Therefore TruCru, working in partnership with Studio Wignall and Moore, designed a system that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology within the museum’s historic fabric. Our expert team worked tirelessly to ensure that the installation process minimised impact on the space.

State-of-the-Art Technology
To deliver these immersive experiences, we employed a carefully selected range of cutting edge technology:
Visual Display:
- Panasonic MZ880 Laser Projectors: These powerful projectors deliver stunning image quality and long-lasting reliability. Ensuring vibrant visuals for projection mapping and other displays.
- IIyama Prolite Interactive Display: This interactive display allows users to control the immersive video system, enhancing engagement and interactivity.
- LG Commercial Displays: High-quality displays throughout the space complement the main projection system. Providing additional visual information and enhancing the overall experience.
Audio System:
- Allen and Heath AHM-64: This versatile digital mixer provides precise control over audio sources, ensuring optimal sound quality for all applications.
- Martin Audio CDD Speakers: Custom-painted to match the wall decor, these speakers deliver clear and immersive sound.
- Crown Amplifiers: Powerful and reliable amplification ensures that the audio system can handle demanding workloads.
Media Playback:
- Brightsign XC2055 and XC4055 Media Players: These robust media players provide seamless playback of high resolution video content. Ensuring smooth and reliable operation.
Control System
For system control we opted for Kramer Control, automating daily tasks and simplifying complex audio-visual setups. By programming specific schedules, the system can be automatically powered on and off. Eliminating the need for manual intervention by museum staff. This automation not only saves time and effort but also ensures consistent operation, reducing the risk of human error. Furthermore, Kramer Control provides intuitive control over the entire system, allowing for seamless transitions between immersive experiences, lecture-style presentations, and video conferences. With user friendly web based ui, operators can easily adjust settings, switch inputs, and manage input sources, enhancing the overall user experience.

A New Era of Engagement
In summary the Digital Lab at the Royal Cornwall Museum represents a fantastic example of the direction all museums should be heading in. Embracing new technologies in telling the stories of the past. While combining cutting-edge technology with innovative design, this space offers a truly immersive and engaging experience. Above all the attention to detail and commitment to preserving the museum’s heritage are evident in every aspect of the installation. As the museum continues its transformation, the Digital Lab will play a vital role in attracting new audiences and inspiring future generations.
